A call out to those who served

If you are a Second World War veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, you are cordially invited to be part of a program this month at the Walhalla Library that will tell about the pivotal battle. The program takes place at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, January 27, and everyone is invited. Phil Cheney, county library director, says the program is going to have the dual purpose of recognizing those who fought in the battle, as well as help educate subsequent generations on its significance. Jerry Dyar, county veterans affairs director, says, “Any WWII veterans throughout the county who had anything to do with the Battle of the Bulge are asked to contact the Oconee County Veterans Affairs Office as soon as possible. We want to get as many of these special veterans to the library here in Walhalla as possible on January 27th.” The Battle of the Bulge represented what Nazi Germany considered its last chance to repel the Allies as they made their trek into Europe from Normandy Beach on D-Day. But Dyar says it was Europe’s wintry weather from the Ardennes to Bastogne that made what faced America’s servicemen so difficult.
