A plan for the new trees

If Walhalla City Council says yes, Nutall oak trees and Legacy maple trees will be the new look in the downtown.  Dan Pollock, president of Partners for Progress, says the organization’s tree committee recommends the cultivar or hybrid Legacy maples for the curbs and corners to display the colors of fall.  And, for the new medians, the idea behind the Nutall oaks is to give a “canopy” effect.  Last night the Partners for Progress heard from Richard Harper, Frances Devoe, and Fay Workman of the tree committee, along with John Bodiford, senior Clemson University horticulturist.  Cost is $600 dollars to cover the costs of the trees, soil tests and preparation, and excavation.  Mayor Edwards has asked Harper, chairman of the tree committee, to present the recommendations during the 5:30 pm City Council meeting Tuesday, December 15.  According to Pollock, public participation is welcome and encouraged.  DOT will require Walhalla to apply for an encroachment permit and submit a landscape plan before any work proceeds.
