A tax deadline at 5 today!

The window clerks at the Oconee Treasurer’s Office are ready today to greet the tax-paying public.  Five o’clock this afternoon is the deadline for a property owner to pay his 2015 obligation and qualify for a deduction on his 2015 returns.  If you are paying by U-S mail, the payment qualifies as long as your letter is postmarked no later than today, December 31.  According to Treasurer Greg Nowell, lines at Pine Street are shorter partly because an increasing number of taxpayers are paying their bills online.  2015 county property tax bills may be satisfied without late penalty by January 15.  After the 15th, a three percent penalty applies.  By January 15, Nowell’s office anticipates receiving the county’s annual payment from its top taxpayer, Duke Energy.  For the first time, Oconee expects to process the payment by a wire transfer.
