Plane victims identified

Oconee Coroner Karl Addis identified the fatal victims of yesterday’s plane crash as four men from Warsaw, Indiana–all of them on their way to the Oconee Regional Airport for tonight’s game at Death Valley.  Killed were the pilot Charles D. Smith, 71.  The three deceased passengers were Charles Smith’s son, Scott A. Smith, 44; Tony L. Elliott, 54; and Scott Bibler, 51.  Addis says their families have been notified and autopsies will take place to assist with the investigation.  What happened is being investigated by the FAA.  Shortly after 3 yesterday afternoon, Oconee 9-1-1 received calls that a plane went down into a wooded area in the Tabor Community between Westminster and the Georgia line.  Later emergency workers found the wreckage of a 1984 single engine Piper Saratoga.  The plane departed from Indiana around mid day.  Authorities say a May Day was later received by the Greenvlle Spartanburg International Airport.
