“All-Green” all good for Oconee Nuclear in 2013

Last evening’s open house at the Oconee World of Energy was anything but a formal sit down between Duke Energy officials and representatives of the government’s nuclear watchdog NRC. The open house was carried out in an informal manner to transmit to the public and others interested how well Oconee Nuclear operated from a safety standpoint during the last year. There were only “green” indicators given to the safety findings—with green being the highest rating on the government’s color-coded measurement system. “It’s acceptable and it’s in what we called the licensee-response column which means we inspect their normal operations. We have no planned follow-up inspections,” said Gerald McCoy of the NRC when asked about Oconee Nuclear’s performance in 2013. Comments by McCoy, as well as those by Scott Batson, site vice president at Oconee Nuclear are being aired today on 96.3/WGOG NEWS.
