Alternate use for the existing jail

A proposal is being put together for an alternate use of Oconee’s Detention Center once that penal facility is no longer needed when the new county jail opens later this year. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said he will introduce a proposal at next week’s meeting of the county’s Law Enforcement, Public Safety, Health and Welfare Committee to allow a religious-based entity to use the old jail as a place to help those afflicted by drugs and other problems. “Christ Central Ministries, which is located here in Walhalla—the Ash Tree Recovery Center—possibly looking at a proposal of creating an almost national pilot program of resource and support center, help center,” Crenshaw said.
