August is anticipation month for Oconee’s Auditor

In the dog days of summer, Oconee County’s Ken Nix is a man of anticipation. At his Pine Street office Nix, the Oconee County auditor, awaits word from the state as to the 2014 assessment of Duke Energy’s Oconee County holdings. And the word could arrive within days. The assessment is all-important for Nix as he calculates the tax levy Oconee County will require. And he cannot make a recommendation to Oconee County Council until he can confidently estimate the amount that the county’s highest taxpayer will be billed. “I do expect something (from the South Carolina Department of Revenue) next week. And then once I get those figures, I’ll be able to finalize my recommendation and wull be scheduling a session with County Council on the first Tuesday night of September, which is September 2,” Nix told 96.3/WGOG NEWS this morning. The assessment will include taxable holdings covering Oconee manufacturing, along with other companies in the utility business such as Norfolk Southern and Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative.
