Oconee County service organizations may apply for emergency food and shelter monies.  A total of $21,978 dollars is available through the United Way of Oconee.  Only non-profit agencies (no individuals) may apply and should call the United Way no later than 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, April 23 to be considered.

Walhalla is pooling money to repair sidewalks up and down Main Street, both sides of the street.  Mayor Tim Hall spoke to 101.7/WGOG NEWS today about a request for qualifications from the HDH Construction Group.  Hall’s comments on the condition of sidewalks in the city can be heard in our over-the-air newscasts.

Walhalla seeks to end its arrangement for technical assistance from the state’s Main Street program.  It’s a decision voted, following city council’s executive session of last night.  Walhalla has its own Main Street program, and that program is going to continue, according to Mayor Tim Hall.  

A policeman in Seneca found clothing and couch cushions littering part of the 123 By-Pass, beneath the Northampton Road bridge. The incident Sunday evening led to the arrest of a 32-year-old Utica man.  Law enforcement records show Richard George Wright charged with littering, 15 to 500 pounds first offense.

Oconee County deputies conducted bus safety drills with county school district drivers.  The goal of the training was to help prepare the drivers to deal with potential incidents on their bus.  The April 1 drills involved three scenarios.  But, for security and tactical reasons, specific info about the scenarios is not being released by the sheriff’s office.

The U-S Forest Service of the Agriculture Department announces a prescribed burn today inside the Andrew Pickens District of the Sumter National Forest.  It’s to be a prescribed burn of 110 acres in the Drummond Creek unit.

The 3rd Congressional District has a new voice in the nursing business in South Carolina.  The name of John Whitcomb is to be presented for state senate approval in the coming weeks.  The director and chief academic nursing officer at the Clemson University School of Nursing, Whitcomb appeared April 4 before the Senate Medical Affairs Committee for a confirmation hearing.
