Azarenka, Ferrer advance as rain plays havoc with U.S. Open Schedule

Rain from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac played havoc with the schedule at the U.S. Open in Queens, New York, yesterday (September 4th), as only two singles matches were completed and several were suspended after play began. In the two full matches, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated seventh-ranked defending champion Sam Stosur of Australia 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to reach the semifinals, and fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer downed 13th-ranked Richard Gasquet of France 7-5, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal match between Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli was postponed after just four games, and Andy Roddick’s fourth-round faceoff against Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina was suspended with Roddick leading 1-0 in a first-set tiebreaker. Defending championNovak Djokovic’s match against Stanislas Wawrinka was also suspended in progress.
