Backpack gets $500 donation

The coffers of the BackPack Program that provides food for students in need over the weekends has been infused with a $500 dollar donation from the Oconee Education Association. Sherry More, OCEA president, presented the check to the Oconee Education Foundation. The foundation this summer will continue to raise funds for the food program. The program works this way: Once permission is received from the parents, a backpack filled with six to eight pounds of nutritious, child-friendly food is sent home each Friday. The cost to feed one child during the school year is $160. So far this year, the program has served 368 elementary students and 58 middle school students.
