Bartee seeks parole

Inmate James Bartee could gain parole next month—provided the state Probation and Parole Board agrees.  A spokesman today said Bartee, the one-time candidate for Oconee Sheriff, will go before the board of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services Wednesday, August 5 in Columbia.  Bartee began serving a five-year term in September 2013, after his conviction in the General Sessions Court.  Pete Boyle of the Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, says once it hears from Bartee August 5 the board will make its decision that day.  An Oconee jury nearly two years ago found Bartee guilty of solicitation to commit a felony.  The crime arose out of a failed plot to kidnap a judge who was presiding over a civil challenge to Bartee’s qualifications  for the ballot.  According to Boyle, regardless of the outcome of the bid for parole, the prisoner will become eligible for early release in March.  Whenever Bartee leaves prison, he’ll face five years of probation.
