Bat disease jumps from the mountains to the midlands

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recently received confirmation that white-nose syndrome has been confirmed in a tri-colored bat in Richland County. It’s a disease that has killed millions of bats in east North America. Previously, the only known cases of the disease in South Carolina had been found in the mountain counties of Oconee and Pickens. While the disease is not harmful to humans, scientists know the spores can be transported on clothing and gear.
