Black ice still a major concern

Patchy black ice is still possible on area roads into early Thursday, according to the National Weather Service office at the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport. In fact, the condition of area roads Thursday could be as bad or worse than what was seen Wednesday morning. Partly to mostly sunny skies should lead to warming pavement temperatures Wednesday, so you would expect road conditions to improve as ice melts and water evaporates. However, air temperatures will struggle to rise more than a degree or two above freezing.  Shaded or sheltered portions of roadways will likely remain cold enough for plenty of ice into Thursday morning. Couple that with the runoff from what little percipation has partially thawed, and conditions could actually be worse come Thursday morning.  You’re urged to use extra caution if driving for the next 48 hours, especially on secondary roads, by slowing down, providing extra stopping distance between vehicles and taking turns slowly.
