Bradford pears on borrowed time?

Some sentiment appeared during last night’s meeting of the Walhalla city council committees in favor of chopping down the Bradford pear trees on Main Street—-in advance of the start of Streetscape. But the position taken by Mayor Danny Edwards and Councilman Danny Woodward prevailed to at least wait until the city sees the bids for the remake of the four-block section. The bids are intended to attract contractors’ estimates for what it’ll take to complete what’s now envisioned as a scaled-down version of Streetscape from the plan agreed to last year. As Mayor Edwards put it, Walhalla had better wait before cutting the trees just in case city leaders don’t like what they see in the bids. Those bids are expected to go out soon.
