“Calling of the roll”–a Vietnam War tribute

An Oconee County event this month will be one of two tributes this year to Oconeeans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.  Everyone is encouraged to bring a lawn chair at 10 o’clock Saturday morning, May 21 to the War Memorial on the Main Street side of the courthouse for the “calling of the roll” of the 21 Oconee men who died in the southeast Asia war.  This is the 50th year anniversary of the Vietnam period and the Oconee Veterans Council, in cooperation with the Defense Department, is behind the event.  Jerry Dyar, spokesman for the veterans council, said, “The men and women who make up the ex-military organizations of the OCVC are honored to be conducting commemorative events through 2017—paying tribute to the Vietnam and Era veterans.”  May 21t is also Armed Forces Day.
