Camp site embers ignite small park fire

Quick action prevented a small fire from spreading out of control yesterday afternoon at Oconee County’s South Cove Park near Seneca. The wind blew embers from a camp site, setting afire pine straw. But Phil Shirley, the director of Oconee Parks, Recreation and Tourism says the quick use of a garden hose stopped the fire before the fire department arrived. Although the camp fire was inside a ring designated for such fires, the wind that blew suddenly yesterday afternoon, according to Shirley, is a reminder to park staff to take extra steps to educate park visitors about fire danger. One person complained of smoke inhalation, but Shirley said that individual is fine and turned down emergency treatment.
