Canvassers examine questioned ballots

Oconee’s board canvassers waded this morning through stacks of privisional votes from this week’s General Election.  It’s a necessary step before county election officials certify the results. One complication arose because several Oconee voters on Tuesday had actually been purged from voting rolls for having failed to vote in two previous General Elections.  A smaller pile of provisional votes were cast in what’s called the failsafe precinct, reserved for qualified voters who had changed addresses and had failed, prior to the election, to report their new addresses.  Then there were other issues, such as a 90-year old man who went to the polls but poll workers could not find record of him in their system. At least one voter Tuesday cast a provisional vote after showing up without a required photo ID.
