Clemson University claims an academic first.  Five of its students are chosen for this year’s Barry Goldwater Scholarship.  The scholarship recognizes students of exceptional promise in advancing research in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.  The five are Caroline Argenti, Adam Gatch, Maggie Marte, Cody Waters, and Audrey Wessinger.

A storage unit caught fire at Fair Play, on the Feltman Road.  Oconee Rural Fire sounded the alarm just after 9:30 last night.

Under old business, Westminster City Council will consider a final reading tomorrow of an inducement agreement for the Spinx convenience store chain to locate a new store in the city at E. Main Street and SC 24/the West-Oak Highway.  It’s an agenda item for the 6 pm regular April council meeting at the Fire Department.

Smoke disbursed Friday from a Georgia prescribed burn all the way into Walhalla and as far south as the Bountyland Community near Seneca.  Sky 96.3 Clayton Radio reported a 1,261 acre burn inside the Chattooga Ranger District, five miles northeast of Clayton.  It prompted Mountain Rest Fire Department to post:  “The wind is blowing our direction.”

The kitchen at the Clemson University Madren Center anticipates a greater demand once the new alumni and visitor center is finished.  The board of trustees will use $3.6 million in housing and dining money, along with an additional $700 thousand, to upgrade the kitchen.  The trustees last week also approved two main campus projects:  a $2.5M expansion to the R-4 […]

A luncheon at the new Seneca Middle School is a sellout.  Friday’s event, arranged by Oconee County and the chamber of commerce, will serve as the annual “State of Oconee” and is considered the first venue at the school scheduled to open later this year.  Tours will be offered following the meal and the lineup of speakers.

An apartment in Bountyland was burglarized twice on the same day, but the sheriff’s office made an arrest.  According to the Oconee Sheriff’s Office, Angel Dawn Holloway, 34, is charged with petty larceny, along with first and second degree burglary.  Deputies investigated burglaries, one in the morning, one in the evening, at Gail Court.  Clothing items were stolen.

Ken Sloan says the interest of travel writers in Oconee County makes easier his job at Visit Oconee.  One of those travel writers spent part of last week in the Land Beside the Water county.  Bill Clevlen.  The man that Sloan described as a combination national/global travel writer toured the county last year and photographed attraction scenes that interested him.  […]
