An academic first for Clemson University

Clemson University claims an academic first.  Five of its students are chosen for this year’s Barry Goldwater Scholarship.  The scholarship recognizes students of exceptional promise in advancing research in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.  The five are Caroline Argenti, Adam Gatch, Maggie Marte, Cody Waters, and Audrey Wessinger.

The sky turned grey Friday afternoon

Smoke disbursed Friday from a Georgia prescribed burn all the way into Walhalla and as far south as the Bountyland Community near Seneca.  Sky 96.3 Clayton Radio reported a 1,261 acre burn inside the Chattooga Ranger District, five miles northeast of Clayton.  It prompted Mountain Rest Fire Department to post:  “The wind is blowing our direction.”

Clemson trustees approve upgrades and expansions

Luncheon is a sellout

A luncheon at the new Seneca Middle School is a sellout.  Friday’s event, arranged by Oconee County and the chamber of commerce, will serve as the annual “State of Oconee” and is considered the first venue at the school scheduled to open later this year.  Tours will be offered following the meal and the lineup of speakers.

Apartment burglarized twice, arrest made

An apartment in Bountyland was burglarized twice on the same day, but the sheriff’s office made an arrest.  According to the Oconee Sheriff’s Office, Angel Dawn Holloway, 34, is charged with petty larceny, along with first and second degree burglary.  Deputies investigated burglaries, one in the morning, one in the evening, at Gail Court.  Clothing items were stolen.
