Chainsaw applied to last of the Bradford Pear trees

Walhalla’s love-hate relationship with its downtown Bradford Pear trees is no more. Crews under the supervision of James Moore, public works director, applied chainsaws and activated a wood chipper to the last of the Bradford Pear trees still standing. Their downfall is a pre-runner to the Streetscape project and their eventual replacement with others kinds of trees and vegetation planned for the four-block area of Mainfrom Ann to Tugaloo. To some, the spring bloom of the Bradford Pear trees made them worthwhile. To others, they were a gangly nuisance that buckled some parts of the sidewalk.
