Chest wound proved fatal

An autopsy, at which state police officers were present, shows the victim of Sunday night’s shooting in Seneca died of a wound to the chest.  Coroner Karl Addis said Zachary Hammond sustained a second wound to the collarbone, but that wound was not fatal.  Addis said the wounds are consistent with bullets from a .45-caliber handgun, the kind used by the Seneca police.  For the purposes of the death certificate and statistical data, the coroner has classified the death a homicide.  In the meantime, an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division of Hammond’s death continues.  The officer identified as the shooter has been placed on administrative leave.  His name has not been released.
