Christmas ornaments lost in Main Street mishap

Although most if not all service has been restored, crews continued to work this morning on electric poles and lines on Main Street in West Union. The power outage that started yesterday afternoon and went several hours into the night was caused by a large tree that fell, bringing down Duke Energy and Northland Cable-TV lines. Town of West Union Christmas decorations in the way were destroyed. According to Walhalla Fire Department, as many as three poles had to be replaced. Service for Mayor Linda Oliver and many of the rest of the affected West Union residents was returned by 2:30 this morning. The mayor walked a darkened Main Street and advised residents to get the candles ready and prepare for a long night. “Things happen we can’t do anything about,” Oliver said of yesterday’s incident.
