Commitment to fund seven re-surfacing projects

A committee that controls the use of nearly $5 million dollars for work on state secondary roads in Oconee made commitments this morning to get seven projects goings.  With DOT officials present, the Oconee “C” Fund Committee committed the funds to re-pave parts of Poplar Springs Road, Radisson Road, Sitton Mill Road, E. Reedy Fork Road, Davis Creek Road, N. Cherry Street, and Pruitt Drive.  All three committee members:  Chairman Sam Dickson along with Tally Grant and Dick Cottingham voted after reviewing a list compiled of heavily traveled roads in need of work.  Estimates before the committee showed the seven projects will exhaust $3.8 million of $4.9 million approved during a special allocation by the legislature for the current fiscal year. Not making the cut, at least for now, were two other re-surfacing projects:  W. Cherry Road and the Fish Hatchery Road.  Although not a heavily-traveled road, the Fish Hatchery Road off 107 north of Mountain Rest is considered important because the near two-mile road is the only way into the state’s Fish Hatchery, one of the county’s popular tourist stops.  Before the committee meets next month, committee members Grant and Cottingham plan to drive the Fish Hatchery Road to further evaluate its needs.
