Communication tower requested at Mtn. Rest

An Oconee regulatory authority will be asked to rule next week on whether to allow a communications tower at Mountain Rest. The county Board of Zoning Appeals has scheduled a public hearing during its 6 o’clock meeting Tuesday night, February 25 in County Council chambers at Walhalla. Verizon Wireless seeks permission to put up a 240-250’ tower on highway 28 at Moorhead Place Road—a little more than two miles north of SC 107. According to Josh Stephens, zoning administrator, the height is such that, if approved, the FAA will require the tower to be lighted at night. In making a decision, the board must decide whether the applicant qualifies for a special exception and variance to the zoning enabling law.
