County library leaders pin hopes on voters

April 28, 2014

Library leaders at opposite ends of South Carolina will look to the voters in their counties for the go ahead to renovate and modernize. Oconee and Charleston library officials will bank on favorable referendum votes during the November General Election. Oconee wants to build new libraries and renovate others with the help of a one penny local sales tax. Charleston will ask its voters to approve a property tax increase to renovate and modernize its libraries. While the funding mechanism for each county differs, there are similarities between the Oconee and Charleston library projects. They were identified by the same consulting firm, Providence Associates. And while both counties want to build new libraries, they want to renovate others.
