Death of a county inmate

The Oconee coroner has ruled natural causes in the death of a county inmate.  Ernest Lee Smalley Jr. of Seneca died Tuesday night at the Greenville Memorial Hospital after being found in cardiac arrest the day before in a holding cell at the Oconee Detention Center.  Guards started CPR and EMS was called.  The 33-year old Smalley was transported to the Oconee hospital and admitted overnight before his transfer Tuesday to Greenville Memorial Hospital.  Coroner Karl Addis says an autopsy yesterday showed Smalley died of complications from Delirium tremens and a gastro-intestinal hemorrhage.  The death of Ernest Lee Smalley Jr. is being investigated by “SLED” and the Walhalla police.
