Dexter complains of double taxation

An Oconee councilman appealed last night to the public to demand of the county’s state lawmakers that the state live up to a commitment to its local government fund. That account for years, Reg Dexter complained, has been under-funded to the extent that it caused Oconee’s last tax millage increase. Dexter outlined what he called double taxation. The chairman of the county’s budget and finance committee further asked Administrator Scott Moulder to study 17 state-mandated accounts for which the state has obligated Oconee County to help fund as a means of determining which ones could be de-funded as part of this year’s county budget process. As Dexter spoke, computer screens in council’s chambers displayed in front of the audience the names of Oconee’s state lawmakers and their contact phone numbers.
