Did apathy help doom the 1-cent vote?

If you saw leaders of Oconee Public Library leave Election Central Tuesday night, you saw their walk was a little slower than usual. And, perhaps, that can be traced to shock and disappointment over the failure of the 1-cent capital project referendum. “We were disappointed, but we were pleased that 9,000 out of the 20,000 or so folks who cam out to vote voted in favor of this,” said Philip Cheney, director of the county libraries. As for what the library and its supporters do now, considering their effort to replace the Seneca Library and build and renovate others? “We’re talking about it. The board, of course, will discuss what we need to do…,” Cheney said.
