Distracted driving law signs to be posted

In the week since a no distracted driving law took effect in the un-incorporated areas of Oconee County, sheriff’s officers have yet to stop someone for violating the law requiring hands-free cellular devices. But that, according to Sheriff Mike Crenshaw, is by design. Crenshaw is insisting that before any of his officers make cases, they make sure that they are in compliance. The law was first envisioned as a way to stop the dangerous practice of texting while driving, but Crenshaw decided to include other forms of distracted driving in an effort to reduce accidents and the injuries and the deaths they cause. But the target date for the crackdown will come Memorial Day weekend next month. The holiday weekend traditionally starts the calendar on the so-called “100 deadly days of summer.” That’s when law enforcement deals with higher than normal traffic accidents. In the meantime, as a way to help alert motorists, Oconee County will be posting distracted driving signs at major road entrances to the county. The sheriff stopped by 96.3/WGOG  today to spread word about the law. The entire interview can be heard on Sunday’s ‘Community Soundoff.’
