DOT workers arounnd-the-clock schedule

The roads and bridges have a salty look to them this morning. Ahead of the forecast winter event, South Carolina DOT crews—especially those in the Upstate—began anti-icing pre-treating operations yesterday. Crews in other parts of the state remain on standby. Those pre-treating operations in the Upstate will continue this morning and anticipate a switch to a response mode by this afternoon. DOT urges everyone to travel carefully near heavy equipment vehicles. There are many ways motorists can stay informed of the latest road conditions, including the web and the 511 system App. In a winter weather emergency, DOT workers follow a designated plan in each county. Interstate highways are first priority, followed by primary routes and areas near medical facilities and emergency shelters. They work 12 hour shifts of pre-emptive ice treatments, snow plowing, and spreading salt and other materials to achieve safer, improved road conditions.
