Editorial—-Treasure trove of history

Oconee Heritage Center, the Cherokee Museum, and Patriot’s Hall are all places in a row to stop for those interested in local and area history. But you can sort of say the same about the Oconee Courthouse. Only about 10 years old, the courthouse and its lobby area have become a place to glimpse at the past. Two glass displays of history are now full of old stuff. It’s a rather eclectic collection—such as a 1955 Westminster phone book, a 1964 S.C. map, and a display of typewriters from the pre-computer era.

One memento that caught our eye was an over-sized glass ashtray from the judge’s chambers at the old courthouse, during a time when South Carolina was a state where tobacco ruled.

That’s our view. What’s yours?
