Emotional farewell for David Smith!

After 10 years, David Smith is bound for the sideline that is retirement. But his presence at the head of Westminster city government is felt. And the feeling last night in the council members was emotional as Councilwoman Donna Sheriff fought back tears to say goodbye. She credited Smith, who left Cairo, Georgia city government to work in Westminster, for handling city administrator’s duties in a way that saved her city from losing its corporation. Councilman Jimmy Powell said at the start, Smith set out to “raise the bar” for Westminster and, in Powell’s judgment, he succeeded. Smith thanked his employers and said he would miss his job, though not all of the long nights of meetings. The community may wish Smith the best when a David Smith retirement party, sponsored by the chamber of commerce, will take place 5:30 Thursday evening, June 26.
