Estimate: SCAG opinion 2-3 weeks off

The Oconee Treasurer and the county School District may have to wait only a few more weeks before the State’s opinion is ready on whether the district must receive a share of annual fees and penalties associated with county tax payments. Two months ago County Treasurer Greg Nowell, when challenged by the public schools, announced he would request an opinion from the state Attorney’s General on whether he acted properly in denying the district a portion of those fees. Mark Powell, spokesman for Attorney General Alan Wilson, said, today, “The folks in our Opinions section are still working on it. They estimate it will be ready in approximately 2-3 weeks.”
