Examining the Governor’s plan

Though not all details have been fully fleshed out, Oconee’s superintendent of education has begun to examine Governor Haley’s plan for South Carolina education in 2014. Dr. Mike Lucas says he’s always happy when there’s a greater focus on the public schools. Lucas has drawn some preliminary conclusions about how the Haley plan would impact Oconee County students and teachers. Under the plan, poverty will become an element of a new formula to distribute state funds to the local districts. To stress reading, the Governor calls for a reading coach in every elementary school. Lucas says, “In Oconee, only three of our schools qualify for 100% funding and the other 8 schools would receive 50% of the necessary funding for a fulltime coach.” Lucas’s reaction can be heard today on 96.3/WGOG NEWS.
