Final grade to be applied to Oconee roundabout

In the next few days, the DOT predicts, a final asphalt grade will be applied to Oconee County’s first roundabout intersection.  And once the final touches are applied where the Wells Highway crosses the Mormon Church and Strawberry Farm roads near Seneca, Oconee motorists can expect a smooth ride around an intersection nearest county government’s solid waste operations.  The state is experimenting with roundabouts in every county as a way to help move traffic through intersections.  Remindful of rotary intersections, roundabouts in these parts require motorists to adjust their driving habits.  The advice we have been getting is to slow down on your approach to the roundabout and obey traffic signs, especially the signs that instruct drivers to yield right of way.  Josh Makison, DOT resident construction engineer, says some special amenities will be there for the ease of large trucks negotiating the roundabout.  Makison says lighting will be added to make the roundabout very visible at night time.  Under contract from the DOT, Thrift Development of Seneca is general contractor for the project.
