Fire hydrants in the middle of Main? Why not?

The Walhalla fire chief is thinking out of the box when it comes to Streetscape. Chief Doug Kelley has confirmed he has approached utilities superintendent Scott Parris with the idea of re-locating Main Street fire hydrants to the median, as part of the re-make of a four-block section downtown. Preliminary to converting Main Street, from Ann to Tugaloo to two lanes, will be the re-location of utility lines. That way, in the event of a Main Street fire there, fire fighters could rely on hydrants in the median to fight fires on either side of the street.
