Fire renders dynamite safe

A small shed near LakeKeowee that contained dynamite was set afire yesterday for the purpose of making the dynamite safe.  After the owner of the shed found the dynamite, Keowee Fire Department responded to Doug Hollow Road and was joined eventually by the bomb squad from Anderson.  The experts advised local authorities that the safest course would be to burn the shed to make the dynamite safe.  According to an announcement by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office, it’s unknown how long the dynamite was there but its appearance and age, along with the danger of improperly stored dynamite, necessitated the need to turn to outside help.  A reverse 9-1-1 message was sent to all homes within 1,500 feet recommending take shelter.  This was followed by fire fighters knocking on every door to ensure the message had been received.  The scene was not far from the Lighthouse Restaurant.
