First case of mosquito-borne illness in horses

The South Carolina state veterinarian has confirmed this year’s first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis. An un-vaccinated horse died from the disease in Barnwell County. The mosquito-borne illness in horses can also affect people. Vaccination can prevent the disease in horses. Boyd Parr, state veterinarian and director of Clemson University Livestock-Poultry Health, urges horse owners to check with their veterinarian—especially in the coastal counties. Any livestock, including horses, that display neurological symptoms must be reported to the state veterinarian within 48 hours, according to state law.
