“Five years after Fukushima”

The public has an invitation to the Duke World of Energy next month to hear an up-to-date report of how the electric utility has responded to enhancing safety in the event that what happened a few years ago in Japan repeats itself in Oconee County.  A tsunami and earthquake struck Japan’s Fukushima Diachi nuclear plants.  While a tsunami seems out of the question at Oconee, the potential for an earthquake can’t be dismissed.  The aftermath of that Japanese tragedy required all U-S nuclear plants to develop a strategy to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the NRC that they would maintain their plants in a safe condition during a blackout scenario.  Delivering the report the evening of Thursday May 5 will be Scott Batson, site vice president of Oconee Nuclear.  Light refreshments at 6 o’clock and the program will follow at 6:30.
