Floating platform suggested to curb drownings

Last Friday’s drowning in an upper section of Lake Keowee is a reminder to the Oconee County council member who represents the area that swimming in the vicinity of “The Rock” can be dangerous. And last night, in an effort to help swimmers who are overcome while attempting to swim out to the popular area, District One’s Edda Cammick suggested the county go to the expense and effort of locating a floating platform—midway between the shore and the rock. Cammick proposed that Oconee, in its new budget, include money for the platform. The councilwoman made her recommendation after a public comment speaker, Nancy Farrar, complained that many rural sections of the county are unsafe for walking, biking, and running. As an example Farrar mentioned two-lane Shiloh Road where a Seneca dentist was killed last week while riding his bicycle.
