Former Oconee deputy arrested

The investigation of a physical abuse complaint has led to the arrest of an Oconee sheriff’s deputy. The state police obtained a warrant charging Robert Beddingfield with assault and battery third degree on his nine-year old son. Beddingfield was placed last night in the Oconee Jail and, according to the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Mike Crenshaw terminated Beddingfield from his job immediately. In the investigation, the Department of Social Services took measures to ensure the safety of the child. “No one is above the law,” says Sheriff Crenshaw. “That includes employees of the Sheriff’s Office. Officers will not be treated any differently than any other resident of Oconee County and if allegations surface and are proved to be true, appropriate action will be taken.” Beddingfield was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in January 2013 after being previously employed by the Westminster police.
