Former West Union man excels in education

A former West Union resident and Walhalla High graduate has climbed the ladder of education in nearby North Carolina. Dr. Alexander Macaulay, associate professor of history at Western Carolina University, has been named one of the best teachers in the University of North Carolina system in recognition of his ability to convince students that history is more than just memorization of dates and the study of accomplishments. He’s the son of Mariah and retired Judge Alex Macaulay of West Union. Dr. Macaulay is among 17 recipients of the 2015 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and will receive the award May 9 at the Western Carolina’s undergraduate commencement.
