FRIDAY SPORTS: HS and College Football; BoSox win; Seahawks top Cardinals

*Golden Corner High School Football Friday night carries 96.3 WGOG to Warrior Field in Westminster where West-Oak will host Palmetto for Homecoming 2013. We hit the air with the Northland Communications Pregame Show at 7:00 PM. Kick off is set for 7:30 PM. Elsewhere Friday night, Walhalla is at home to take on Wren, and Seneca will host Belton-Honea Path. Liberty travels to Crescent. Daniel will host Emerald. Greenwood is at TL Hanna. Pendleton will face Carolina Academy. Chesnee goes to Powdersville. JL Mann is at home against Westside.

*One of the biggest college football games of the season takes place Saturday night at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium as #5 Florida State pays a visit to #3 Clemson. That kick off is set for 8:22 PM on ABC. ESPN’s College Gameday is in town for the second time this season and the show will originate from Bowman Field beginning at 9:00 AM Saturday. This is only the second top-5 matchup all-time for Clemson. The other one saw the Tigers defeat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to cap the 1981 National Championship season. Elsewhere Saturday, #11 South Carolina is in Knoxville to take on Tennessee at Neyland Stadium and the Georgia Bulldogs are not far away as they are in Music City to face Vanderbilt. Here on 96.3 WGOG, the Furman Paladins take on Appalachian State with air time at 12:00 PM from the Furman Barnes and Noble. Kick off is set for 1:30 PM.

*The Boston Red Sox are now just one win away from advancing to the World Series after beating the Tigers 4-3 Thursday night in Detroit to take a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven American League Championship Series. The Red Sox scored three of their four runs in the second inning, beginning with a Mike Napoli solo homer. Napoli also scored the winning run an inning later on a wild pitch by Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez. Game 6 will be played Saturday in Boston.

*The Seattle Seahawks topped the Arizona Cardinals 34-22 Thursday night, upping their record to 6-1. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was 18 of 29 for 235 yards with three touchdowns, while Cardinals QB Carson Palmer went 30 of 45 for 258 yards with a touchdown. However, Palmer was intercepted twice and sacked seven times.

*The 2013-14 Furman men’s basketball team has been picked to finish ninth in the Southern Conference in polling of the league’s media and 10th in voting by the league’s 11 head coaches. Elon was picked as the preseason SoCon favorite by both the media and coaches with Davidson tabbed to finish second in both polls.

*NBA preseason play on Thursday saw Ben Gorden score 22 points off the bench, and the Charlotte Bobcats cruised to a 110-84 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
