FRIDAY SPORTS: HS Football Friday; Clowney expected to play Saturday; Shrine Bowl roster set

*Golden Corner High School Football on 96.3 WGOG Friday night features Walhalla taking on Palmetto in Williamston. And, we’re shuffling the lineup just a bit. Jimmy Watt and Jeff Underwood will provide the call of the game. Kris Butts will be hosting the Edwards Auto Sales Scoreboard Show after the game. Regular host Tony Medlin is out of town this week. Our coverage begins Friday with the Northland Communications Pregame Show from Williamston at 7:00 PM. Elsewhere Friday evening, Seneca travels to Emerald while West-Oak hits the road to face Wren. The big matchup of the evening takes place at Belton Honea Path where the Daniel Lions take on the Bears in a battle of Top-10 AAA teams. Crescent will visit Carolina Academy. Hanna is at Laurens. Liberty will host Blacksburg. Powdersville goes to Pendleton. Westside is at Easley. In Northeast Georgia, Monroe Area visits Stephens County. Elbert County will host Morgan County. Hart County is at Oconee County. North Oconee goes to Franklin County.

*College football Saturday on 96.3 WGOG will feature the Furman Paladins as they take on Chattanooga from Finley Stadium at 6:00 PM. Our coverage begins with the Paladin Pregame Show at 5:00 PM. South Carolina begins a three-game road trip in Fayetteville where they take on Arkansas at Reynolds Stadium. That one kicks off at 12:20PM. Junior All-America defensive end Jadeveon Clowney practiced for the second-straight day on Thursday after missing the Kentucky game with a strained muscle around his ribcage. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward says he expects Clowney to play Saturday. Clemson is home to face Boston College with kickoff set for 3:36 PM on ABC.

*The Shrine Bowl rosters were announced Thursday afternoon and head coach Tommy Brown of Orangeburg-Wilkinson picked Mason Rudolph of Northwestern and Jacob Park of Stratford as his quarterbacks. Five future South Carolina Gamecocks are on the team. They are RB Joe Blue of Dillon; TE Kevin Crosby of Bamberg-Erhardt; WR Shaq Davidson of Gaffney; TE Kalen Ritchie of Goose Creek; and OL Malik Young of Woodmont. Three Clemson commitments were included. Kendall Joseph of Belton-Honea Path; RB Jae’Lon Oglesby of Daniel; and PK Alex Spence of West Florence.

*The Detroit Tigers are headed to the American League Championship Series after shutting out the Oakland A’s 3-0 Thursday night to win their best-of-five AL Division Series 3-2. Tigers starter Justin Verlander pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and Miguel Cabrera got the big hit with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Tigers will face off against the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS, with Game 1 set for Saturday in Bean Town

*The Chicago Bears defeated the New York Giants 27-21 Thursday night, sending the Giants to a dismal 0-6 record for the first time since 1976. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was 24 of 36 for 262 yards with two touchdowns, while New York QB Eli Manning went 14 of 26 for 239 yards and a touchdown, but gave up three interceptions.

*The Minnesota Lynx won the WNBA title Thursday night for the second time in three years, beating the Atlanta Dream 86-77 to sweep the best-of-five finals 3 games to none. Maya Moore scored 23 points for the Lynx, while Tiffany Hayes led Atlanta with 20 points. The Dream were swept in the finals for the third time in four years.
