FRIDAY SPORTS: HS hoops; Clemson player honors continue; Gamecock frosh receive honors

In high school basketball Thursday, the Seneca boys defeated Westside 83-54. Marquis Hunter led the Bobcats with 20 points. Westside’s girls defeated the Lady Bobcats 60-44. Elsewhere, Tamassee-Salem’s boys downed Liberty 71-65, with Austin McMahan leading the way with 27 points. The Lady Eagles fell to Liberty 50-43.

Clemson placed two players on the Walter Camp Football Foundation All American Team announced Thursday night while USC had one selection. The is the 124th edition of the squad which is the nation’s oldest All American team. Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley was named to the first team while his teammate, receiver Sammy Watkins, was a second team selection. Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who was a first team choice in 2012, was named to the second team this year.

Three South Carolina Gamecocks were named to the 2013 SEC All-Freshman Team as voted on by the SEC’s 14 head coaches. Pharoh Cooper was twice recognized as an all-purpose player and return specialist with Skai Moore picking up honors at linebacker and Elliott Fry at placekicker

The Gamecocks are losing a player. Sophomore Ahmad Christian is planning to transfer. The Jacksonville native accounted for 18 tackles, three pass breakups and one forced fumble this season.

The San Diego Chargers upset the favored Denver Broncos 27-20 Thursday night in the Mile High City, the first time the Broncos have lost at home in the regular season in 14 games. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers went 12 of 20 for 166 yards with two touchdowns, while Broncos QB Peyton Manning was 27 of 41 for 289 yards with two TDs.
