FRIDAY SPORTS: Turnover-plagued Clemson falls to FSU

Clemson committed a season-high 18 turnovers and Florida State converted them into 25 points in a 56-41 loss for the Tigers on Thursday at Littlejohn Coliseum. The loss dropped Clemson to 1-1 in the ACC and was the Seminoles’ first in two conference games. K.J. McDaniels led the way for Clemson with 14 points, but the Tigers turned the ball over and struggled shooting the ball as well.

Senior Chris Czerapowicz poured in a team-high 21 points, including seven during a late 19-5 Davidson run, to lift the Wildcats to a 73-56 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men’s basketball action on Thursday night at Timmons Arena in Greenville.

In women’s hoops, No. 10/11 South Carolina led by as many as 22 points in the second half and held off a late charge from No. 9/10 Kentucky (13-3, 1-2 SEC) to capture a 68-59 victory in SEC play on Thursday night at Colonial Life Arena. A trio of Gamecocks (15-1, 3-0 SEC) had the offense clicking – guard Tiffany Mitchell poured in a game-high 17 points, forward Aleighsa Welch posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards and center Alaina Coates recorded her third straight double-double with 10 points and a South Carolina freshman record 17 rebounds.

Former South Carolina Gamecock and current Chicago Bear wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is headed to the NFL Pro Bowl. Originally selected as an alternate following a breakout season, Jeffery was named to replace Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, who will be unable to play due to an injury.

An attorney for the woman who accused star Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault said Thursday that she plans to sue this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, as well as FSU and the Tallahassee Police Department. A sexual encounter between the two that Winston’s attorney claims was consensual took place in December 2012. The woman, who was also a Florida State student at the time, reported what happened to Tallahassee police, but no charges were filed against Winston by prosecutors, who investigated the case nearly a year later. The woman’s attorney, Patricia Carroll, last month criticized the way the police investigation was handled, and said her client was, quote, “treated like a suspect.” In addition to winning the Heisman this year, Winston led Florida State to its first undefeated season and national championship since 1999.
