From Newry to Los Alamos

From the Oconee County former mill village of Newry to the Defense Department’s laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico. That turns out to be the life’s path for Houston T. “Terry” Hawkins, and now Hawkins will return to his home roots next week to lecture at Clemson University, his alma mater. Hawkins will be the featured speaker for the Clemson Calhoun Lecture Series at 7 Monday night at the Strom Thurmond Institute. Monday’s program is free and open to the public. Since 1988, Hawkins had led major scientific and technical programs aimed at detecting, preventing and reversing the pro-liferation of weapons of mass destruction and the use of those weapons by international terrorists. Hawkins was reared in Newry and is a 1959 graduate of Seneca High School. Seneca Historian Louise Bell, once asked to name those from Seneca who have distinguished themselves the most, ranked Hawkins in her top five.
