Frontier encampment

Frontier encampment If you are looking for an unusual way of treating your loved one on Valentine’s Day, the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism hopes you will consider a visit to one of Oconee County’s most historic plots of land. A frontier encampment takes place Saturday, February 14 at the Oconee Station State Historic Site as a way to try to re-create what it must have been like in the 18th century when Oconee Station was a frontier outpost. The program from 10 a-m to 3 p-m that day will include period-related activities—-such as musket demonstrations and cooking. The program is appropriate for all ages. The park, near highway 11, contains two historic structures: Oconee Station, a stone blockhouse used as an outpost by the South Carolina State Militia from 1792 to 1799, and the William Richards House named for the Irish immigrant who ran an Indian trading post at the turn of the 19th century.
