Fungal Disease Threatens Snake Populations

The South Carolina department of Natural Resources has verified the first case of Snake Fungal Disease in South Carolina. A copperhead found in Spartanburg County has tested postitive for the diseases. Herpetologist Will Dillman with the S.C. Department of Natural resources says the fungal disease is a great concern because wild populations may not be able to deal with a new pathogen. The disease has been identified as a potential threat o wild snakes and has been associated with significant declines in snake populations in other parts of the county. The DNR says some snake species seem more susceptible to the disease.
