Further details on the wounding of two Lavonia policemen

The police chief in Lavonia, Georgia has identified the two policemen shot and wounded Monday night and given further details as to what happened in the parking lot of a Zaxby’s restaurant near I-85. Chief Bruce Carlisle said when the officers discovered a car driven by Khari Anthony Dashuan Gordon of Greenville was stolen, the officers attempted to arrest him. At that point, Gordon allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at the officers, striking both. They were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment. Carlisle identified the officers as Lavonia Police Captain Michael Schulman, 50, a 15-year veteran of the Lavonia Police Department. He is married with two children. Schulman is in ICU in Greenville Memorial Hospital and was shot in the upper arm under his vest. The other officer is identified as Jeffrey Martin, 22 of Toccoa.  Martin is married to Dr. Lindsey Martin and has only been with the Lavonia Police Department for about three months. Martin suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and will need surgery, according to the Chief. Around 11 Monday night, Gordon was spotted in the area of Stone Bridge Road near Highway 59 in Lavonia. A perimeter was set up in the area where Gordon was believed to have been hiding in some woods and by 11:15p, the GBI confirmed he had been arrested without incident. Gordon is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Additional charges are pending.
