Getting a handle on what the county owns

A few years ago, a handful of legal-sized papers were needed to list Oconee County owned property. Now the county requires a binder about as thick as a New York City phonebook before the cell phone impact on landline telephones. Last night County Administrator Scott Moulder leafed thru the binder as he addressed county owned properties in front of a county council committee. Moulder said the document, assembled by the Oconee Assessor’s Office, shows $22 million worth of land and $36 million worth of buildings. Some of those properties sit idle and Paul Corbeil, member of the Real Estate, Facilities and Land Management Committee, said he favors identifying which properties can be sold and converted to cash for the county.
